Dictionary

As promised Guys, I tried my best to cover most of the words we have taken during the course. This is what i could gathered. By the way, my reference of the meaning is coming from OXFORD WORDPOWER English English Arabic and all the words are been searched one by one from the dictionary. I tried to make it simple and i hope that it will be useful. I have done it in Word document but it seems here it is not in a table format. Anyway i am sending to you all the word document through emails

Eloquent

Extrovert
A person who is lively and cheerful and who prefers being with other people to being alone (The opposite is introvert)
He is a very extrovert person

Inhibited
Not able to express your feelings freely or naturally; not relaxed
The young man felt shy and inhibited in the room.

Persuasive
Able to make somebody do or believe something
The arguments were very persuasive

Rambling
Not saying things in a clear way; confused
He was rambling during the speech

Succinct
Said clearly in a few words
He said the conclusion succinctly

Digress
To stop talking or writing about the main subject under discussion and start talking or writing about another; possibly less important
He started to digress from the main subject

Repercussions
The unpleasant effect or result of something you do
His resignation will have serious repercussions

Vast
Extremely big
A vast country

Cement
To make a relationship very strong
This agreement has cemented the relationship between our companies

Foster
To help or encourage the development of feelings or ideas
I am going to foster your ideas

Disrupt
To disturb a process or system
The strike severely disrupted flights to Spain

Jeopardise
To do something that may damage something or put it in a dangerous position
He jeopardise our relation by ignoring the manager

Sour
To become unpleasant or unsatisfactory
Their relationship turned sour after a few months

Undermine
To make something weaker
The public’s confidence in the quality of our drinking water has been undermined

Devious
Clever but not honest or direct
I wouldn’t trust him, he can be very devious

Devoid of
Not having a particular quality; without something
To be devoid of hope

Devotion
The act of giving a lot of your time, energy ect
His devotion to the duty is amazing

Off Hand
Used about behaviour; not friendly or polite
He is an offhand person

Sore
Aching or painful
To have a sore throat

Prosper
To be successful, especially financially
Our company has to succeed in China in order to prosper

Pursue
To continue with Something; to find out more about something
To pursue a career in banking

Affiliate
To connect an organization to a larger organization
Our local club is affiliated to the national association

Affirmative
Meaning yes; opposite of negative
An affirmative answer

Forge
To create relationship with something
Our school has forged links with a school in Romania

To make a copy of something in order to deceive people
To forge a signature

Hail
To say in public that something is very good
The book was hailed as a master piece

Intrusion
Something that disturbs you or your life when you want to be private
He refuses intrusions into his personal life

Intuition
The feeling or understanding that makes you believe or know something without any reason or
proof
She know, by intuition, about his illness although he never mentioned it

Arrogant
Thinking that you are better and more important than other people and not caring about their feeling
He is an arrogant person

Lucrative
Producing a lot of money
This business is a lucrative one

Affectionate
Showing that you love or like somebody very much
A very affectionate child

Companionship
Friendship or company
A lot of people get married for companionship

Fetch
To go for and bring back something
Shall I fetch you your coat?

Tatters
Badly torn or damaged
Her dress was in tatters

Snuggle
To get into a position that makes you feel safe, warm and comfortable; usually net to another person
She snuggled up to her mother

Purr
To make continues low sound that shows pleasure. It is used only for cats
The cat is purring.

Claw
One of the pointed nails on the feet of some animals and birds
Cats have sharp claws

Enrage
To make somebody very angry
He enraged me by going to the cinema

Sarcastic
A sarcastic sense of humor
That was a sarcastic comment

Savage
Very Cruel or fierce
A savage attack by a big dog

Cruel
Causing physical or mental pain or suffering to somebody
I think it’s cruel to keep animals in cage

Fierce
Angry and aggressive
The house was guarded by fierce dogs

Supper
The last meal of the day (dinner)
We will have our supper

Diligent
Constant in effort to accomplish something; attentive and persistent in doing anything
He is a very diligent student

Synergy
Combined action of functioning
Our group name is synergy

Cultivate
To try hard to develop something/ to try to form a friendship with somebody who could be useful to you
Our company try to cultivate customer relationships

Irreverent
Not feeling or showing respect
It is not good to be an irreverent person

Stipulate
To say exactly and officially what must be done
The law stipulates that all schools must be inspected every three years

Disgruntled
Rather angry; disappointed and annoyed
Disgruntled employees could cause potential damage

Rebel
To fight against authority, society, an order, a law
She rebelled her parents by not cleaning her room

Gusto
With Great enthusiasm
We all joined the program with gusto

Vile
Very bad or unpleasant
She’s in a vile mood

Crawl
To move slowly with the body on or close to the ground or on the hands and knees
Their baby has just started to crawl

Crave
A strong desire for something
He craves attention from other people

Amicable
Made or done in a friendly way without argument
I am sure we can find an amicable way of setting the dispute

Lukewarm
Not showing much interest, not keen
John’s rather lukewarm about going to Iceland

Impair
To damage or weaken something
Ear infections can result in impaired hearing

Vigil
Period when you stay awake all night for a special purpose
All night she kept vigil over the sick child

Vigour
Strength or energy
We started work with renewed vigour

Gush
To flow out suddenly and in great quantities/ to express pleasure or admiration in an exaggerated way
Blood gushed from the wound

Advocate
To recommend or say that you support a particular plan or action
The minister advocated a reform of the tax system

Rampage
To rush from one place to another, breaking things and attacking people
The football fans rampaged through the town

Rapture
A feeling of great joy or happiness/ show that you think that somebody is very good
I didn’t like the film buy my friend went into raptures about it

Triumph
Success, especially in a competition or battle; the feeling of joy that you have because of this
The soldiers returned home in triumph

Trivial
Of little importance
The person was so trivial

Guzzle
To eat or drink greedily
He guzzled the food yesterday

Grace
The ability to move in a smooth and attractive way
To walk, dance, move with grace

Grotty
Unpleasant; not nice
She lives in a grotty room

Gracious
A person pleasant, kind or polite
The queen gave a gracious smile as she drove past

Destitute
Not having the things that are necessary in life such as money, food and home
He is a destitute man, he is always sleeping in the street

Motto
A short sentence that expresses a rule for a person’s or organization’s behaviour
Nike motto is “Just do it”

Rapport
Relation, connection
The teacher tries to establish close rapport with his students

Breach
An act that breaks an agreement or law
She was dismissed from the company for breach of contract

Epidemic
A large number of cases of people or animals suffering from the same disease at the same time
A flu epidemic broke out in February

Rein
A long thin piece of leather that you use for controlling a horse
Reins are joined to a bridle which fits over the horse’s head

Buzz
To make the sound that bees
A large fly was buzzing against the window

Miniature
A representation of image of something on small or reduced scale
RIM is the miniature of Microsoft

Eminent
Famous and important
An eminent scientist

Gadget
A small tool or machine
Knife is a gadget for killing

Colloquial
Words or expression more suitable for speech than writing
He has a colloquial language

Paternity
The state of being father
The importance of paternal interest and support

Nostalgia
A feeling of affection mixed with sadness for things that are in the3 past
I feel nostalgic person

Prairie
A very large area of flat land and covered in grass with few trees
It is a prairie forest

Notion
Something that you have in your mind, an idea
I have a vague notion that I had seen her before

Mugger
A person who attacks something in this way to steal from him
The mugger steal my wallet

Sanitation
A system for protecting public health, especially by removing waste
We have a strong sanitation system in our country

Perk
An extra benefit
It is a very good perk to take free ticket every year

Leach
To gradually soak into
The water leach into the soil

Sturdy
Strong and healthy; that will not broke easily
A sturdy child

Conducive
Helping or making something likely to happen
This hot weather is not conducive to hard work

Patronise
To treat somebody in a friendly way but as if you were better than him/her
He is a patronise person
